What is Citation Flow, and why does it worry me? First of all, Citation Flow is not a business opportunity. Is Amway A Pyramid Scheme Or Scam? It is not a pyramid scheme or scam. It is a metric that is based on simple mathematical logic. That logic is, “the more websites that cite this page, the higher its popularity will be.”
If that logic sounds too simple to you–and it is only a technicality in the world of internet marketing–consider that it is actually the first step in the process of finding, building, and maintaining a highly visited website (such as Google). How does Citation Flow find the page? It searches for the root domain (the site’s URL) using a set of algorithms. If the page doesn’t have a cite-able URL, it stops its search; if it finds one, it calculates the rank of that page based on how often other websites cite that URL and factors in how authoritative that URL is.
The second step in the process of building the Page Rank score is to calculate the relevance of the page for that keyword phrase. That is called contextual ranking. To do that, Citation Flow uses a weighted algorithm. That algorithm measures the level of authority for that URL according to various factors. For example, the URL might be ranked very high (or very low) according to a certain key phrase.
Why would a high page rank result in low contextual ranking? Because, ideally, all links should count equally. Otherwise, if some links are more valuable than others, you would end up with a situation where lots of low quality backlinks are paired with lots of high quality links. And since the Page Rank score is calculated based on the total number of citations, the system would end up giving very low weights to very many pages that are high in page rank, and vice versa. Therefore, the Page Rank value is artificially high, resulting in very low contextual scores, and a correspondingly low ranking for the links.
But we know that the key to increasing your trust flow is to build as many trusted web URLs as possible. So, the question is, how can Citation Flow help?
